VENUE STATEMENT: CLOSET acknowledges that the venue at Bourke Street Courtyard was formerly Bourke Street West Police Station prior to 1976. This place was a site of colonial violence and the organisation it once housed was and still is responsible for many atrocities, including Aboriginal deaths in custody. To this day, law enforcement in this country fails our First Nations people.
As a queer organisation we regularly claim spaces back for our community, but recognise the need to respectfully acknowledge the past and pay the rent.
A percentage of profit from this event will be offered as a donation to the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service so they can continue to fight to reduce the disproportionate involvement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the criminal justice system. Find out more here: vals.org.au
We will also distribute a percentage of funds to the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service who have been supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout the pandemic. Donate or find out more here: https://www.vahs.org.au/
In future events, we will also be supporting Koori Pride.
